LEE’S FRIENDS, an award-winning cancer support non-profit celebrating 41 years of service to the cancer community of Hampton Roads will celebrate this anniversary by awarding their Third Annual Legacy Award to Virginia Oncology Associates (VOA), the largest Oncology/Hematology practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Established in memory of Lee Harkins, a vibrant 16-year-old who lost her battle with Hodgkin’s Disease in 1978, LEE’S FRIENDS opened the doors to service March 1, 1979. For 41 years, the original focus on cancer patients has never changed. LEE’S FRIENDS offer FREE resources to patients of all ages and stages and their families ~ emotional support from trained volunteers, round trip transportation to and from doctor and treatment appointments, financial assistance and special events celebrating life’s everyday joys.
The motto of LEE’S FRIENDS is “helping people live with cancer”. To honor that motto, the LEE’S FRIENDS Legacy Award was created to recognize an individual or organization in the Hampton Roads community who demonstrates and embraces it. This year’s honoree, Virginia Oncology Associates, has been in practice for over 35 years. LEE’S FRIENDS and VOA enjoy a successful and long-term collaboration. LEE’S FRIENDS’ volunteers daily transport patients to and from VOA locations throughout Hampton Roads ensuring that these patients get a chance at the state-of-the-art cancer care offered at Virginia Oncology and a chance to experience our motto of “living” with cancer.
The award will be presented on Sunday, March 1 at the 41st Anniversary Celebration of LEE’S FRIENDS service to our community. The event will be held at the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club located at 7001 Hampton Blvd., Norfolk, VA from 4:00 ~ 6:00 p.m. The presentation will be made at 5:00 p.m.
